BANGKOK: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) chief announced on Wednesday that the organisation is in negotiations to deliver cross-border humanitarian aid into the war-torn nation with Myanmar’s ruling junta, its armed adversaries, and its neighbours.
Since February 2021, when prominent generals overthrew Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government, there has been conflict in Myanmar. Mass protests turned into an armed uprising against the country’s formidable military.
About one-third of Myanmar’s 55 million people need humanitarian aid, but the ICRC is unable to provide it in many areas due to security concerns and access restrictions, according to Mirjana Spoljaric. This is because large portions of the country are currently in conflict.
“There’s a complete collapse, I mean, a total absence of medical services in certain regions,” Spoljaric told Reuters.
“There’s very little food available right now, and not even medicine is coming in.” Mirjana claimed to have informed junta chief Min Aung Hlaing that the ICRC is able to provide more aid while on a trip to Myanmar that concluded this week.
