Regarding The South China Sea, Beijing Cautions The UK Against "Inciting Tensions"

“The South China Sea is currently one of the safest and freest maritime routes in the world,” says China, claiming almost the whole strategically significant waterway. Beijing: China’s foreign minister David Lammy described Beijing’s moves in the disputed waters as “dangerous and destabilizing,” and China cautioned Britain on Tuesday against “provoking tensions” in the South China Sea.

Lammy on Monday denounced Beijing’s “dangerous and destabilizing activities” in the South China Sea in a video partially shot alongside a Philippine Coast Guard vessel. Even though an international court has ruled that China’s claims lack legal foundation, the strategically significant waterway is nevertheless claimed by China in almost its entirety. “The UK should respect China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea and refrain from provoking tensions or sowing discord over regional disputes,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said in response to a question regarding Lammy’s remarks.

According to Mao, the South China Sea is one of the world’s safest and most unrestricted shipping lanes at the moment. A series of clashes in recent months have resulted from Beijing’s deployment of coast guard and navy ships in an attempt to keep Manila away from important islands and reefs in the South China Sea.
