RIYADH: The Saudi delegate, speaking to the UN Human Rights Council during its 57th session, warned of the growing threat that space debris poses to human rights and sustainable development, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, Saudi Arabia’s permanent envoy to the UN in Geneva, stressed the need for space sustainability to protect the game-changing advantages of space technology for humanity while speaking on behalf of 123 nations.
He emphasised that using space has “revolutionised global communications, weather forecasting, and disaster management,” emphasising the critical role these developments play in defending basic human rights.
The infrastructure that supports these operations is seriously at risk due to the growing issue of space debris, the envoy warned. He claimed this threat might seriously impair the international community’s capacity to uphold and advance fundamental human rights.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in especially Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), are directly related to the management of space debris, according to Bin Khothaila. Effective space debris reduction, he stressed, is essential to preserving access to the technologies that support disaster response, urban planning, and weather monitoring.
