RIYADH: Saudi Arabia praised British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s declaration on Tuesday that, absent several “substantive steps” from Israel, the UK will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September.
The Kingdom reiterates its appeal to the international community and nations that value peace to take decisive action that upholds the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to create their own sovereign state within the 1967 boundaries, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
If Israel does not take the required actions by the time the UN General Assembly meets in September, Starmer warned on Tuesday, the UK will recognize a Palestinian state.
The two-state solution must “end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect,” he continued.
At the time when the two-state solution has the greatest impact, I have always stated that we will recognize a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process,” Starmer said. Now that that solution is in jeopardy, it is time to take action.
