As part of the Kingdom’s subsequent acceptance of the UNCCD COP16 Presidency, Saudi Arabia has introduced the Young Researchers Awards at the COP16 Science Pavilion.
The esteemed competition, which has a $70,000 total prize fund, is accessible to students and young researchers worldwide and seeks to accelerate ground-breaking research and creative solutions tackling drought, desertification, and land degradation. Early-career researchers (up to age 35) who can contribute significantly to important fields like drought resilience, sustainable land management, and land restoration will receive seven scholarships, each worth $10,000. The seven award categories are land restoration, equitable land governance, resilient and climate-adaptive systems, science, technology, innovation, community and youth involvement, sustainable agri-food systems, and finance and sustainable land.
The awards will be given out at a high-profile event during UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh. The nominees will receive lodging five days after their flight to Saudi Arabia. Additionally, winners will get the exceptional chance to receive mentoring from top professionals. The main causes of many problems affecting people worldwide, such as forced migration, food insecurity, and water insecurity, are land degradation, drought, and desertification. Dr. Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister for Environment, Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, and Advisor to the UNCCD COP16 Presidency, stated that COP16 in Riyadh provides a chance to discover immediate answers and help reverse these worldwide catastrophes.
