Saudi Civil Defence Warns of Flash Floods as Storms sweep Through the Kingdom

RIYADH: The Saudi Arabian Civil Defence has advised the public to exercise caution and avoid valleys and flood-prone areas due to the anticipated occurrence of thunderstorms in the majority of the Kingdom. Heavy rain has the potential to initiate flash floods.

The General Directorate of Civil Defence recommended that residents remain in secure locations, refrain from swimming in valleys and areas where water accumulates, and adhere to official instructions distributed through media outlets and social media platforms.

The National Center for Meteorology’s forecast for Saturday, Oct. 17, indicates that moderate to severe thunderstorms may result in torrential runoff, hail, and strong winds that stir up dust and sand, potentially reducing horizontal visibility to near zero.

The conditions are expected in parts of the Northern Borders region, as well as the Hail, Al-Jouf, and Makkah regions, and in the Jazan, Asir, and Al-Baha regions. Parts of the Eastern Province, Tabuk, and Madinah are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall. Additionally, the NCM issued a warning regarding the potential for fog to form in the early morning and overnight in the coastal regions of Madinah, Makkah, and the Eastern Province.
