RIYADH: Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji attended Monday’s meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Contact Group for Somalia in Doha, Qatar. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Elkhereiji emphasized the importance of increasing international assistance for Somalia’s security, prosperity, and stability. He emphasized the necessity of infrastructure and long-term production initiatives that correspond with Somali government interests, including as the exploitation of newly discovered natural resources.
He clarified: “The Kingdom continues to provide relief and humanitarian aid through KSrelief, reflecting its commitment to supporting the Somali people and advancing relief and development efforts that promote stability and reduce human suffering.” Elkhereiji also restated the Kingdom’s support for the Somalia-Ethiopia reconciliation negotiations in Turkey, describing it as a first step toward peace between the two states.
He stated that the deal indicates a real willingness to resolve concerns and create a future of peace, stability, and collaborative growth for both countries and the organization. Elkhereiji decried actions intended to destabilize Somalia and undermine national unity. He stressed the need of working together to combat extremism, which poses a danger to state security, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development.
Elkhereiji also complimented Somalia for gaining a non-permanent membership on the UN Security Council in 2025-2026. He characterized it as a significant diplomatic milestone that represents increased international trust in Somalia’s ability to promote global peace and security.
