Saudi Officials Reveal Details of Highly-Anticipated ‘Zarqa Al-Yamama’ Opera

RIYADH: The first Saudi opera and the largest to be performed in Arabic, “Zarqa Al-Yamama,” will be presented, according to details released by Saudi officials on Thursday.
The Theater and Performing Arts Commission announced during a press conference that the King Fahd Cultural Center in Riyadh will host the opera from April 25 to May 4.
The commission’s CEO, Sultan Al-Bazei, stated: “The opera Zarqa Al-Yamama signifies a new era in Saudi culture, as the most well-known tales from our history and tradition are brought to life on stage using top-notch pieces that meet the most exacting international standards.

He conveyed his gratitude for the attention and follow-up provided by Culture Minister Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, who also serves as the chairman of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission’s board of directors.
The Saudi and foreign creatives involved in the opera’s creation were present at the London ceremony on February 16th, when Prince Badr announced the opera’s premiere.
Al-Bazei said that the language, spirit, and narrative of “Zarqaa Al-Yamama” are derived from the cultures of the Arabian Peninsula.

The opera, although portraying ancient history and mirroring the miseries of modern man, “in some ways embodies a bloody tragedy, without being devoid of the specter of hope that heralds a bright and prosperous future.
