Saudi, Syrian Foreign Ministers Meet at Munich Leaders Meeting in AlUla

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan met with his Syrian counterpart, Assad Al-Shaibani, on Wednesday to explore ways of strengthening ties between Riyadh and Damascus. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Leaders Meeting in AlUla, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Both sides discussed avenues to enhance cooperation, particularly in boosting Syria’s security and economic stability, to support the needs and aspirations of the Syrian people.

This year marks the first time Saudi Arabia is hosting a Munich Leaders Meeting, an extension of the Munich Security Conference established in 1963. The gathering has brought together about 70 senior figures from around the world, including government officials, security experts, and policymakers, to address issues of global security and diplomacy.

During the forum, Al-Shaibani also joined a panel on Syria’s political transition following the fall of President Bashar Assad. Panelists highlighted concerns about foreign intervention and the possible reemergence of Daesh. Assad’s regime collapsed in December after an advance by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, bringing an end to the Assad family’s decades-long rule. The formation of a transitional government afterward was welcomed internationally as a step toward stability.
