BEIRUT, Lebanon: At least six people were killed in two Israeli strikes on central Beirut early on Wednesday, according to Lebanon. Local media also reported airstrikes on Hezbollah’s stronghold in the southern suburbs of the city, which is supported by Iran.
The Israeli military last week attacked a Beirut branch of the banking company Al-Qard Al-Hassan, which has ties to Hezbollah. According to local media, one strike targeted an apartment in the central Zuqaq Al-Blat district.
The government’s headquarters and other embassies are adjacent to the heavily inhabited neighborhood. The Israeli military had sent an evacuation notice prior to last week’s strike, but no similar warning was given prior to the most recent raid.
Media reports state that another strike occurred in the heavily populated central Basta region, which Israel had previously targeted during a conflict with Hezbollah in 2024. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, there were six fatalities and twenty-four injuries from the two strikes.
The ministry also stated that DNA testing will be necessary to identify human remains found at one of the scenes. Early on Wednesday, AFP correspondents in Beirut heard multiple explosions. Lebanese media also reported multiple strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which are a bastion of Hezbollah, a militant organization that supports Iran.
