In Riyadh, the South African Ambassador Celebrates Freedom Day

RIYADH: On Thursday, the Cultural Palace in Riyadh hosted a Freedom Day celebration organized by South Africa’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mogobo David Magabe.

Every year on April 27, South Africa celebrates Freedom Day in remembrance of the day it held its first democratic election in 1994, which marked the end of the nation’s legalized racial segregation. According to the embassy in Riyadh, the 30th-anniversary celebration will take place after Ramadan. “South Africa and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have a significant relationship in several areas, which makes today very important,” Magabe told Arab News. Our diplomatic ties, which will turn 30 this year, have significantly expanded since 1994.

The ambassador said, “Saudi Arabia is a regional power that is positioning itself as a gateway into the market and GCC countries. “The two friendly nations play a very important role, and South Africa is also a gateway into the continent of Africa.”

Magabe outlined the various trips that South Africa’s dignitaries have made to the Kingdom, such as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in October 2022.

During that visit, the two parties agreed to explore areas of cooperation in the energy, petroleum and petrochemicals, electricity, and renewable energy, including solar and wind, sectors. They also signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding totaling over $15 billion.
