South Sudan Hunger Emergency: International Aid Drops to Historic Low

NAIROBI: Oxfam reported Wednesday that nearly half of South Sudan’s population is facing acute famine and has never gotten so little relief. The UK-based NGO reported that barely 40% of South Sudan’s $1.6 billion humanitarian plan for 2025 had been received as Western nations reduced relief contributions.

Oxfam said that about six million South Sudanese are suffering from acute hunger and have inadequate access to clean water and sanitation, with the figure predicted to rise to 7.5 million by April. Massive corruption by elites looting South Sudan’s oil revenue, as proven by the United Nations, has left the country with nearly no essential services.

It’s as if the world is turning its back on those who need it the most, right when their survival is on the line,” said Shabnam Baloch, Oxfam’s South Sudan country director, in a statement. South Sudan attained independence in 2011, but then saw five years of horrific civil war, which displaced more than two million people, and there are worries of further fighting this year as a peace accord unravels. It also houses hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the violence in neighbouring Sudan.
