PORT SUDAN: Sudan’s defense minister announced on Tuesday that the national army will continue its fight against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following a security and defense council meeting to review a ceasefire proposal from the United States.
Defense Minister Hassan Kabroun, speaking on state television, thanked the Trump administration for its peace efforts but emphasized that the army’s war preparations would move forward. “Our preparations for war are a legitimate national right,” he said after the meeting in Khartoum.
Details of Washington’s new truce proposal have not been made public. The conflict, now in its second year, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions to flee their homes. In recent days, fighting has spread to new parts of Sudan, raising fears of an even greater humanitarian crisis.
The US government, which has recently mediated in several African and Middle Eastern conflicts, is now pushing for a ceasefire in Sudan. However, the army-aligned authorities have previously rejected a ceasefire plan that excluded both the military and the RSF from any transitional political process.
