RIYADH: Taif’s renowned and hilly rose plantations have developed into a significant center for the manufacture of fragrances, generating over 550 million flowers a year and powering a multimillion-dollar industry.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, about 910 rose farms cover an area of 270 hectares and care for 1.14 million bushes in locations such as Al-Hada, Al-Shifa, Wadi Muharram, Al-Wahat, and Al-Wahit.
From March through to April, a rainbow of petals unfurls across terraced fields, providing over 70 firms and laboratories dedicated to extracting and creating over 80 sought-after derivatives that enjoy enormous popularity in the SR64 million ($17 million) domestic market.
The fragrant crops have turned the hilly governorate into a rose capital of the world, with a basket of 84,450 roses setting a Guinness World Record.
In addition to lectures, workshops, and other events catered just for fans of Taif’s roses, guests can witness the distillation process firsthand.
The director of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s office in the Taif region, Hani bin Abdulrahman Al-Qadi, clarified the significance of the Rose Festival, which involves over 60 farms and their families participating and exhibiting their products for five days of events.
