KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan: As tensions with Beijing increase, Taiwan on Thursday showcased its maritime defenses against a possible Chinese attack as part of a multifaceted plan to thwart a mainland invasion.
In waters close to Taiwan’s largest port, Kaohsiung, a significant international commercial hub thought to be essential to resupplying Chinese forces should they establish a beachhead on the island, the island’s navy demonstrated its Kuang Hua VI fast attack missile boats and Tuo Chiang-class corvettes.
The 19-person crew of the Kuang Hua VI boats are equipped with locally built Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles, and they demonstrated their capacity to launch an emergency to intercept enemy vessels attempting to cross the 44-kilometre boundary of Taiwan’s contiguous zone, which is where governments are allowed to take defensive measures.
China frequently challenges Taiwan’s readiness and capacity to repel invaders with ships and aircraft, which causes Taiwan to deploy warships, activate missile systems, and scramble warplanes. On Wednesday, Taiwan called on China to stop its continuous military operations in the surrounding waters, claiming that they are threatening the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait and interfering with global trade and shipping.
