The US Embassy in Damascus Raises its Flag and Declares That Peace Between Israel and Syria is Achievable

DAMASCUS: During his first visit to Damascus on Thursday, the recently appointed U.S. ambassador to Syria praised the new government and said it was prepared for talks, expressing his belief that peace between Israel and the Syrian Arab Republic was feasible. For the first time since the US embassy closed in 2012, Thomas Barrack hoisted the American flag over the ambassador’s house, highlighting the swift growth of US relations with Damascus after President Donald Trump unexpectedly declared the removal of sanctions and met with Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa.

“The issue between Israel and Syria may be resolved. However, it begins with a conversation,” Barrack said to a small gathering of reporters in Damascus. “We should begin with a non-aggression pact and discuss borders and boundaries,” he stated. Although Congress had a six-month review period, Barrack added that the United States would no longer consider Syria a state sponsor of terrorism, stating that the problem was “gone with the Assad regime being finished.”

“The president’s vision and America’s intent are that we must give this new government a chance by not interfering, not demanding, not imposing our culture on your culture, and not giving conditions,” Barrack stated. Former Al-Qaeda leader and interim president Sharaa is quickly reorienting a nation that, under the more than 50 years of Assad family control, had tense relations with the West and strong links with Iran and Russia.
