WASHINGTON: On Friday, US President Donald Trump volunteered to mediate a conflict between Ethiopia and Egypt on the waters of the Nile River. In a letter to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi that was also shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, he stated, “I am ready to restart US mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to responsibly resolve the question of ‘The Nile Water Sharing’ once and for all.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Addis Ababa inaugurated on September 9, has angered Cairo, which is downstream on the Nile. With a population of over 120 million, Ethiopia is the second most populous country on the continent, and its economic aspirations revolve around the $5 billion dam on a tributary of the Nile.
