WASHINGTON: In yet another sign of his mounting annoyance with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump threatened Monday to impose tariffs on Russia if an agreement to end the war in Ukraine could not be reached in 50 days. Trump made the statement while meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office.
The Republican president declared, “If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs.” In an attempt to isolate Moscow in the international economy, he claimed that they would be “secondary tariffs,” which would target Russia’s trading partners.
According to Rutte, among of the countries that would purchase goods for Ukraine include Germany, Finland, Canada, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. “Speed is of the essence here,” he added, adding that the shipments should force Putin to “reconsider” peace talks.
Trump has long bragged about his cordial connection with Putin and has stated time and again since taking office in January that Russia is more open to a peace agreement than Ukraine. Trump also referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and charged him with extending the conflict.
