As part of his ongoing transition operations leading up to his January inauguration, US President-elect Donald Trump visited Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at his Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday.
Meloni’s visit comes after Trump recently met with foreign leaders, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Argentine President Javier Milei, who all visited Florida to meet with the president-elect. Trump and Meloni spent the evening at a video screening that focused on conservative attorneys’ difficulties in the judicial system.
Trump lauded Meloni after returning from dinner after entering the main ballroom at around 7 p.m.: “I’m here with a fantastic woman, the prime minister of Italy. We’re only eating dinner tonight, but she’s really taken the world by storm, including Europe.”
Important members of Trump’s new cabinet also attended the screening, including Scott Bessent, his nomination for Treasury Secretary, Representative Mike Waltz, his option for national security adviser, and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, his choice for secretary of state.
In the meantime, President Joe Biden is getting ready to visit Rome later this week to meet with Pope Francis and Meloni. During their conversation, Biden will “highlight the strength of the U.S.-Italy relationship” and express gratitude to Meloni for leading the G7 over the past year.
