Tunisian Doctors Strike as Health System Nears Collapse: What You Need to Know

TUNIS: As part of a larger wave of social unrest sweeping the nation, thousands of young physicians went on strike around Tunisia on Wednesday to demand higher pay and warn of an imminent collapse of the health system.

President Kais Saied’s most significant difficulty since taking total control in 2021 has been a wave of environmental and anti-government demonstrations brought on by a deteriorating economic crisis and interruptions in public services.

Marwa, who chose not to reveal her last name, stated, “We are exhausted, underpaid, and working in a system that is breaking down,  as she and hundreds of other medical professionals attended a protest gathering in Tunis’ capital.

If nothing is done, the issue will simply become worse and more doctors will quit,” she continued. As they gathered close to Tunisia’s parliament, the demonstrators, dressed in white coats, held signs that included, “Save our hospitals” and “Dignity for doctors.

In addition to low pay, the demonstrators bemoaned out-of-date equipment and a lack of basic medical supplies, which they claimed were contributing to an increasing number of young medical professionals leaving for Europe and the Gulf. The leader of the Young Doctors’ Organization, Wajih Dhakkar, told Reuters, “We will continue to escalate, resist, and lead the social movement in the country as long as the authorities ignore our demands.
