Britain’s maritime agency and security firm Ambrey stated that a merchant vessel claimed it had been attacked early on Monday by three small craft in the Red Sea, some 70 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s coastal city of Hodeidah.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reports that two manned small craft fired at the vessel after an unmanned small craft collided with it twice.
It stated that the crew and ship were safe and that they were heading to the next port of call.
No one immediately claimed to be in charge of the attack. However, the Houthi militia in Yemen, which is affiliated with Iran, has been attacking trade channels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with drones and missiles since November. These actions, according to the group, are a show of support for Palestinians impacted by Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
The ship, according to Ambrey, met the Houthi target profile.
According to UKMTO, the ship carried out “self-protection measures” before the small craft abandoned the attack after 15 minutes.
The Houthis have murdered at least three sailors and sunk two ships in as many raids since November.
