Germany is Cutting its Military Aid to Ukraine in Half, Even Though Trump Might Return to the White House

Next year, Germany intends to cut its military funding to Ukraine in half, despite the potential for Republican nominee Donald Trump to retake the White House and stifle backing for Kyiv.

A draft of the 2025 budget states that Germany will reduce its funding to Ukraine from approximately 8 billion euros in 2024 to 4 billion euros ($4.35 billion) in 2025.

Germany anticipates that Ukraine will be able to cover the majority of its military requirements with the $50 billion in loans from the Group of Seven’s frozen Russian assets, and that money put aside for arms will not be completely utilized.

Washington pressed for Ukraine to get a large lump sum of money now by “front loading” the loans.

According to officials, one of the reasons EU leaders approved the proposal was that it lessens the likelihood that Ukraine would run out of money in the event that Trump wins reelection.

This week, alarms went up throughout Europe when Trump announced Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential nominee. Vance has cautioned that Europe will need to rely less on the US to defend its borders and opposes military help to Ukraine.

When Trump implied that he would not defend nations who did not fulfill the transatlantic military alliance’s defense budget standards and would even encourage Russia to attack them, Western diplomats reacted angrily to his remarks.
