UN Chief Expresses Deep Concern Over Escalating Crisis in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced deep concern over the escalating violence in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher Darfur where civilians face indiscriminate attacks, summary executions gender-based violence and ethnically motivated assaults amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Guterres strongly of condemned these grave violations of international humanitarian law and human rights stressing the imperative for safe delivery of humanitarian aid and protection for all civilians. He emphasized that attacks on civilian infrastructure and medical facilities must stop immediately, as those trapped in El Fasher suffer shelling, starvation, and lack of access to essential services.

Addressing reporters earlier Guterres warned that external interference and arms supplies to warring parties have further undermined the possibilities for peace and a ceasefire in Sudan. The UN estimates that over 12 million Sudanese have been displaced, with nearly a quarter of the population enduring acute hunger as the civil war intensifies. Guterres called on all nations involved to halt actions that obstruct peace urging the global community to step up efforts for humanitarian relief and a lasting political solution.
