United Nations Decides to Close Hodeida Monitoring Mission

United Nations Decides to Close Hodeida Monitoring Mission

United States of America: On Tuesday, the UN Security Council agreed to end a mission that attempted to impose a truce in Hodeida, the port city of war-torn Yemen. Houthi obstructionism has left the mission without a purpose, and it has to close,” stated Tammy Bruce of the US delegation, who was one of the 13 members of the council who supported terminating the mission’s mandate.

The internationally recognized government of Yemen is a patchwork of factions united by its resistance to the Houthis, who were supported by Iran and drove them out of the country’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The Houthis currently control a large portion of the country’s north. Hodeida is also in their possession.

Since 2015, a coalition led by Saudi Arabia has supported the Houthis in their struggle with the government, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of Yemeni deaths and a serious humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis have been detaining UN employees on occasion since 2021, and some of them are still being held. The British-sponsored resolution that was agreed on Tuesday mandates that UNMHA, the UN mission in Hodeida, close on March 31. Since 2019, it has existed.
