WASHINGTON: In response to an ambush attack that claimed the lives of two US soldiers and an American interpreter nearly a week ago, the Trump administration began military operations in Syria on Friday in an effort to “eliminate” Daesh group members and weapons locations.
According to a US official, it was “a large-scale” attack that targeted 70 locations in central Syria where Daesh (also known as the Islamic State or IS) held weapons and infrastructure. More strikes should be anticipated, according to another US source who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss classified operations.
According to the officials, F-15 Eagle aircraft, A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack aircraft, and AH-64 Apache helicopters were used in the attack. According to one official, HIMARS rocket artillery and Jordanian F-16 fighter jets were also utilized.
This is a proclamation of revenge, not the start of a battle. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on social media, “Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States of America will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people. Following the attack in the Syrian desert, President Donald Trump promised “very serious retaliation,” blaming Daesh. The soldiers were part of a coalition combating the terrorist organization that has hundreds of US soldiers stationed in eastern Syria.
