What Are PLO Parliament Elections and Why Haven’t They Happened Before?

What Are PLO Parliament Elections and Why Haven’t They Happened Before?

According to the official news agency Wafa, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas indicated on Monday that elections for the Palestinian National Council, the PLO’s parliament, will be place on November 1. In the past, members of the council were either appointed or co-opted from inside the movement. This is the first time that people will be able to vote directly for members of the council.

Abbas, who is the president of both the Palestinian Authority and the PLO, said in a decree that “Elections will be held wherever possible, both inside and outside Palestine, to ensure the broadest possible participation of the Palestinian people wherever they reside.”

The PNC has been the PLO’s parliament in exile for a long time. Fatah, Abbas’s political party, is in charge of it. Yasser Arafat, the Palestinians’ historic leader who died in 2004, helped start Fatah. The council does not include the Islamist groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, who are not part of the PLO.
