RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that the formation of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition demonstrated international understanding of the dangers to maritime security and freedom of navigation.
The ministry’s spokesman, Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, said it also represented a joint responsibility to defend maritime routes and global economic interests. His comments come after the coalition was created last week to safeguard international commerce and oil supply routes in the Red Sea region following Houthi attacks and threats.
Al-Maliki said the region and the world were faced with “real and emerging threats,” and that “every nation has the right to take whatever military or political measures it deems necessary to protect its interests and to face these threats.”Currently, there is ongoing coordination between the Red Sea littoral states to improve the security of the maritime corridors and protect the common interests,” he said.
Al-Maliki noted that the Kingdom, based on its experience in the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, had gained great success in neutralizing marine threats, including combating drones, fast assault boats and naval mines.
