Why Northeast Syria Is on High Alert Before Key Agreement Takes Effect

QAMISHLI, Syria: On Sunday, Syrian Kurdish security forces said that there would be a curfew in two cities in the country’s northeast next week, before a new arrangement with the Islamist-led government in Damascus goes into effect.

Damascus and the Kurdish forces came to a full agreement on Friday to slowly bring the Kurds’ military and civilian institutions into the state. This happened after the Kurds gave up land to government forces that were moving forward in recent weeks.

Mazloum Abdi, who leads the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, said that the arrangement will start to be carried out on the ground on Monday. Both sides would pull back their troops from the front lines in areas of the northeast and from the town of Kobani in the north.

He added that a “limited internal security force” will go into some regions of Hasakah and Qamishli, but that “no military forces will enter any Kurdish city or town.” Kurdish security forces said there will be curfews in the northeastern city of Hasakah from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Monday and in the main Kurdish city of Qamishli from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Tuesday.
