Following severe charges against the group from demonstrators supported by President Kais Saied, the leader of a significant Tunisian trade union confederation appealed on Monday to protect it. Rights organizations have been worried about dwindling freedoms since the president made a power grab in 2021, and the demonstration last week, which the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) said featured “an attempted attack” on its offices by Saied’s followers, contributed to those worries.
In reaction to Thursday’s gathering, which included charges of “corruption” and being “a mafia,” UGTT president Noureddine Taboubi said during an emergency meeting of the union’s leadership. We are not above the law; therefore, anyone with a complaint should seek legal remedy,” Taboubi stated, promising to uphold the organisation’s “dignity and honour.”
For its role in assisting the North African nation’s democratic transition after the Arab Spring revolution, the UGTT was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015. In a video message, President Saied pledged to guarantee “accountability” for the UGTT’s alleged misdeeds and voiced his support for the dozens of demonstrators who had assembled outside the organization’s Tunisian headquarters. Several major rights organisations have endorsed the UGTT; the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights claims that labour unions have been the targets of defamatory attacks.
