Wizz Air Will Cease Operations in Abu Dhabi

LONDON: Citing geopolitical unpredictability and restricted market access, low-cost airline Wizz Air announced Monday that it was ending its six-year-old Abu Dhabi operation to concentrate on its primary European market. Wizz, which first concentrated on central and eastern Europe before branching out into Britain, Italy, and Austria, stated that it will eventually focus on its far more lucrative European sector.

Demand was impacted by the frequent airspace restrictions around Abu Dhabi brought on by geopolitical unrest, according to Wizz, and engine performance was negatively impacted by the hot Middle East climate, making it challenging to run its low-cost model. According to the airline, it was also unable to expand in the area as it had intended as it was unable to obtain the flying rights for several routes.

According to Davy analyst Stephen Furlong, “they simply couldn’t make money out of the Middle East.” According to Wizz, local flights will cease on September 1, 2025, and passengers will be contacted about reimbursements. “It has become more challenging to maintain our initial goals due to supply chain limitations, geopolitical unpredictability, and restricted market access,” Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi said in a statement. “This was a tough decision, but considering the situation, it is the right one,” he continued.
