Poland Has Restored Border Controls With Lithuania and Germany

WARSAW — In reaction to comparable actions taken by Berlin, Poland has restored border restrictions with neighbouring Germany and Lithuania. Donald Tusk, the prime minister of Poland, announced the reforms last week, and they went into force on Monday. In order to reduce the unchecked flow of migrants across our borders, Tusk stated, “We continue to support freedom of movement in Europe, but the condition is the shared will of all neighbours, symmetrical and united action.”

Poland’s Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak clarified that the measures were directed at “those involved in the illegal smuggling of migrants across the border” in a social media post from his ministry. “Ordinary travellers have nothing to fear,” he stated. According to a border guard official who spoke to the PAP news agency, the reintroduced restrictions would target buses, minibuses, automobiles carrying a lot of people, and cars with tinted windows.

According to the Polish government, officials have not ruled out extending the inspections, which would initially continue for 30 days. Following accusations by far-right organisations in Poland that Germany was transferring refugees into Polish territory once they arrived in Western Europe, pressure has been increasing on Tusk, who just survived a confidence vote in parliament. Friedrich Merz, the chancellor of Germany, has denied that this is taking place. Poland and Germany share a 467-kilometer border and are both members of the Schengen Area, which generally permits residents to travel freely across borders for business or pleasure without a visa.
