JERUSALEM: Following a recent surge in kite, drone, and balloon launches toward Israel, Israel warned Hamas on Sunday that it would intensify operations in Gaza. Hamas denied any involvement. Four kites were discovered in areas close to the Gaza border on Saturday, and one was shot down by the army on Sunday, according to Israeli media. This brings the total number of kites recovered in recent days to about ten.
The events have brought back memories of waves of incendiary kites and balloons that were flown from Gaza in the past, causing fires in southern Israel’s agricultural areas. The Israeli military reportedly believes Hamas was responsible for the non-explosive rockets and may have been testing Israel’s reaction.
In a joint statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said, “Israel warns Hamas that if the launches toward Israel do not cease immediately, the IDF will take action to intensify targeted operations against those responsible and will evacuate the population from areas from which kites, drones, and balloons are launched.
