In a high-stakes visit to his nation’s closest and most significant ally, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump for the first time. Lee landed in Washington, DC, on Sunday, ahead of a formal working-level meeting with Trump at the White House, following a one-day meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo.
Their meeting comes after a trade agreement reached in July where Washington agreed to reduce its reciprocal tariff on South Korea from a 25 percent initial proposal to 15 percent.
The meeting is important for South Korea, whose relations with the Trump administration were strained by internal political unrest sparked by Yoon Suk-yeol, the country’s ousted former president, who briefly declared martial law in December.
The unsigned July trade agreement, which calls for South Korea to invest $350 billion in the US economy and purchase $100 billion in US energy, will be the main topic of discussion. In addition to those staggering amounts, South Korean corporations are expected to make direct investments in the US, which Trump has stated will be decided during their negotiations.
Lee will lead a team made up of the leaders of major South Korean corporations, such as Samsung Electronics, SK Group, Hyundai Motor, and LG Group, accompanied by first lady Kim Hea-kyung.
