UN Backs US Plan for International Stabilization Force in Gaza

UN Backs US Plan for International Stabilization Force in Gaza

The UN Security Council on Monday approved a US-backed resolution for Gaza, authorizing an international stabilization force to provide security in the war-torn territory and envisioning a future path toward an independent Palestinian state. The resolution passed with a 13-0 vote, while Russia and China abstained, avoiding a veto. This marked a significant step for the fragile ceasefire and the reconstruction of Gaza following prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The resolution endorses President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire plan, which includes establishing a Board of Peace as a transitional authority under Trump’s leadership. It mandates the stabilization force to oversee borders, maintain security, and demilitarize Gaza, with the authority expiring at the end of 2027.

US Ambassador Mike Waltz called the resolution “historic and constructive, emphasizing it sets a new course in the Middle East. He described it as a vital step toward a stable Gaza and secure Israel, while stressing that this is only the beginning of ongoing efforts for peace and stability in the region. During almost two weeks of negotiations on the US resolution, Arab nations and the Palestinians urged the United States to strengthen the initial weak wording concerning Palestinian self-determination. They pressed for clearer and more robust language to ensure that the resolution firmly supported the Palestinian people’s right to determine their own future.
