US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia will be formally designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally, marking a significant step forward in defense relations between the two countries. The announcement was made during a black-tie dinner at the White House, hosted in honor of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Trump emphasized the significance of the new status, stating, “Tonight, I’m pleased to announce that we’re taking our military cooperation to even greater heights by formally designating Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally, something that is very important to them.” He added that the news was kept under wraps until the event, calling it a special surprise for the evening.
The designation is expected to deepen military collaboration and symbolize a new era of strategic partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia. Trump highlighted that the move will advance defense coordination “to even greater heights,” reflecting the growing importance of the alliance in global security.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed gratitude for the warm reception, saying, We feel at home.” He referenced the nearly 90-year history of US-Saudi relations, tracing it back to the meeting between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.
