Iraq Launches Probe into Gas Complex Attack That Disrupted Power Supply

BAGHDAD: Iraq announced on Thursday that it would look into an attack on a gas complex in the autonomous Kurdistan region that resulted in power outages and disruptions to gas supplies. In a statement, Sabah Al-Numan, the Iraqi prime minister’s military spokesperson, claimed that Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the country’s acting prime minister, had directed “the formation of a high-level investigative committee” to investigate the incident. “Terrorist groups are attempting to undermine the stability of the country,” according to Al-Numan.

Dana Gas owns the Khor Mor complex, which feeds the majority of Kurdistan’s power plants and has been struck multiple times in recent years. A drone hit the facility late on Wednesday, according to regional authorities in northern Kurdistan, cutting off all gas supplies to the area’s power plants.

According to Dana Gas, a rocket attack on a storage tank at the Khor Mor complex resulted in a production halt but no casualties. AFP correspondents reported power outages throughout Kurdistan, notably in Sulaimaniyah. After decades of conflict and chaos, Iraq has only lately returned to a semblance of normalcy, while such attacks are nonetheless common there. Kurdish officials, who have close connections to the United States, have previously accused armed groups of carrying out rocket and drone attacks in their territory.
