Ithra Looks Back at The Year of Handicrafts with Stories of Art and Heritage

DHAHRAN: The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, popularly known as Ithra, an initiative by Saudi Aramco, launched a comprehensive schedule of projects devoted to upgrading handicrafts in 2025 during a year that celebrated craft as a vessel of memory and a mirror of identity.

Over 100 local and international artists participated in Ithra’s more than 25 activities and events, which included seven art exhibitions. Craft was viewed in the displays as a deeply ingrained cultural and artistic practice.

Eternal Crafts: The Art of the Manuscript, which included eight master artisans with expertise in papermaking, calligraphy, and gilding, provided viewers with a comprehensive introduction to Islamic illumination.

The exhibition was complemented by interactive seminars that bridged knowledge and practice by fusing historical understanding with real-world application. In a similar vein, “Crafts in Conversation: A Convergence Between Traditional and Contemporary Art,” which ran from 2024 to mid-2025, provided a forum to examine the connections between modern artistic innovation and artisanal methods.
