Ceasefire in Northeastern Syria: US Envoy Calls for Stability and Peace

LONDON: On Monday, Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to maintaining the truce between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces in northeastern Syria.

Productive phone call this evening with his excellency Masoud Barzani to discuss the situation in Syria and the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian assistance to those in need, especially in Kobani,” he wrote in a post on social media site X.

In addition to leading the Kurdistan Democratic Party since 1979, Barzani served as president of the Kurdistan region from 2005 to 2017. Nechirvan Barzani, the current president of Syria, earlier applauded a recent proclamation by Ahmad Al-Sharaa that formally acknowledged the Kurdish community as an essential component of the nation.

Barrack reaffirmed Washington’s backing of initiatives to further the agreement reached on January 18 between the Syrian government and the SDF to incorporate the latter into state institutions. Mazloum Abdi is the leader of the SDF, a Kurdish-led group that operates in northeastern Syria and has recently engaged in combat with government forces. The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced a 15-day extension of the ceasefire agreement on Saturday, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
