A Convicted US Capitol Rioter Declines to be Pardoned by Trump

Washington — President Donald Trump has denied a pardon to one of the individuals who participated in the US Capitol riot four years ago, stating, “We were wrong that day.” Pamela Hemphill, who entered a guilty plea and received a sentence of 60 days in prison, told the BBC that the riot on January 6, 2021, should not be forgiven. “Accepting a pardon would only insult the Capitol police officers, rule of law and, of course, our nation,” she stated.

“I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon also would serve to contribute to their gaslighting and false narrative.” Social media users dubbed Hemphill the “Maga granny” in reference to Trump’s “make America great again” catchphrase. “We were wrong that day, we broke the law – there should be no pardons,” she stated on the Newsday program of the BBC World Service.

Shortly after taking office, Trump decided to pardon or commute the penalties of about 1,600 participants in the violent attempt to rig the 2020 election. “These people have already served years in prison, and they’ve served them viciously,” he stated during a press conference held at the White House on Tuesday. “This prison is filthy. It’s been awful. It’s cruel. It’s been an awful, awful experience.

However, some Republican politicians have responded uncomfortably to the move. The decision “raises legitimate safety issues on Capitol,” according to Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who stated that he “just can’t agree” with it.
