A Major Grocery Company in the UK will No Longer Source Israeli Goods

LONDON: After a protracted boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement, one of the biggest grocery stores in Britain will no longer source Israeli goods. According to the cooperative store, the decision was made because of Israeli breaches of international law and human rights. It goes into effect this month.

A motion demanding a stop to commerce with Israel was overwhelmingly supported at the Co-op annual general meeting in May. Israel is one of the 17 “countries of concern” covered by the supermarket board’s ruling. The cooperative will now start phasing out items produced from the 17 nations.

The Co-op board pledged to implement a “sourcing policy aligned with established co-operative values, upholding human rights and the rule of law to promote fair trading and peace” as part of the BDS movement, which was spearheaded by the Palestine Solidarity movement.

Products from nations where “there is consistent behaviour which would constitute community-wide human rights abuses or violations of international law” will no longer be sourced by the retailer. Co-op thinks the new policy “would alleviate suffering and make a difference directly or indirectly to those affected.
