A Prime Example of Sustainable Aviation Practices is Saudi Arabia: An ICAO Representative

RIYADH: According to the president of the International Civil Aviation Organisation Council, Saudi Arabia is a “model” for environmentally friendly aviation practices.

During the Future Aviation Forum in Riyadh, Salvatore Sciacchitano highlighted the Kingdom’s emerging leadership in sustainable aviation in an interview with Arab News.

Sciacchitano stated, “Saudi Arabia is in this sense a model because their plan of development is in the perspective of sustainability,” in reference to the global agenda to reduce carbon emissions. This is really encouraging.

“They are working on low-emission fuel projects. That entails using fossil fuels, but doing so with fewer emissions since they are produced using green energy. Thus, this is a wise course of action,” he said.

The ICAO representative emphasised the value of abiding by international norms and procedures, noting that Saudi Arabia’s aviation industry is expanding in line with international norms.

“The regulations are in place, which we refer to as standards and recommended practices, or SARPs, and they are applicable to all 193 (member) states of ICAO worldwide,” he said.

Sciacchitano emphasised the function of the Kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and commended the agency for its support of the Regional Safety Oversight Organisation, a mechanism for pooling resources at the regional level.
