JEDDAH: The Faculty of Architecture and Planning at King Abdulaziz University has finished a virtual tourism project that uses geomatics technology to provide interactive tours of popular tourist locations.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the program raises awareness of cultural and heritage places. It represents the expanding use of technology for collecting, analysing, and interpreting geographical data. Geomatics, an interdisciplinary discipline that combines geography, engineering, geographic information systems, and remote sensing, supports informed decision-making in various areas.
By employing cutting-edge technology to produce immersive experiences that enable users to visit cultural and heritage places remotely, it promotes the digital transformation of the tourist industry in accordance with Vision 2030.
Additionally, it is consistent with the Kingdom’s advancements in virtual tourism, which are bolstered by the digital plan introduced by the Ministry of Tourism in February 2022.
The approach uses virtual and augmented reality technology to enhance the visitor experience through nine projects and thirty-one activities.
According to Rayan Sahahiri, a faculty member in the geomatics department and project supervisor, the initiative improves the spatial analysis of historic buildings and offers an interactive platform for virtual exploration of architectural features along the Al-Alawi axis in historic Jeddah, known as Al-Balad.
