According to The PM, Greece Wants to Work With Libya to Halt Migration

BRUSSELS: Libya should work with Greece and Europe to help stop a spike in migration from the north African state, according to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday. In recent months, there has been a sharp increase in the number of migrants arriving in Europe by sea from the Middle East and northern Africa, especially war-torn Sudan. In an effort to prevent migrants from reaching its southern islands of Crete and Gavdos, Greece said Monday that it will send out two frigates and an additional vessel off Libyan national seas.

Ahead of a European Union meeting in Brussels that got underway Thursday, Mitsotakis said, “I will let my colleagues know about the sharp rise in the number of people from eastern Libya and request the assistance of the European Commission so that the matter can be resolved right away.” According to Mitsotakis, Libyan authorities have to work with Greece to prevent migrants from leaving the country or to repatriate them before they leave Libyan national seas. He went on to say that early in July, the EU’s migration commissioner and ministers from Italy, Greece, and Malta will visit Libya to talk about the problem.
