The city of VATICAN: According to the Vatican, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several other global leaders will attend the first Mass of newly elected Pope Leo on Sunday. Pope Leo, born in Chicago but spent many years in Peru, will be solemnly installed as the head of the 1.4 billion Roman Catholics worldwide during the St. Peter’s Square Mass. The US delegation, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will be led by US Vice President JD Vance, who heatedly argued with Zelensky at the White House in February.
According to a senior advisor who spoke to Reuters this week, Zelensky would be open to seeing other leaders outside of the inauguration. On April 26, he attended Pope Francis’s burial in the Vatican.
Rubio stated that he will speak with Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the late Pope Francis’ envoy to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, on Saturday about attempts to put an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The senior U.S. ambassador told reporters before the meeting that the Vatican may be a place to promote communication. Rubio told reporters, “I wouldn’t describe it as a broker, but it’s definitely a place where I think both sides would feel comfortable coming.
