ACWA Power and Saudi Aramco Ink Agreements to Advance Desalination, Hydrogen, and Renewable Energy

RIYADH: In order to assess the performance of vanadium flow batteries in the Kingdom’s environment and expedite the rollout of renewable energy projects, the Saudi utility company ACWA Power has inked two agreements with Aramco. The first agreement relates to the creation of an advanced photovoltaic energy forecasting project and was signed during ACWA Power’s third flagship Innovation Days event. The project will enhance forecasts of solar power generation through the application of machine learning and big data analytics.

The model seeks to enhance microgrid management, optimise energy dispatch, and fortify grid stability by increasing forecasting accuracy. The purpose of the second agreement is to assess the vanadium flow battery technology’s longevity and efficiency in the environment of Saudi Arabia. This project will investigate the long-term energy storage capabilities of these batteries and how they can support the growing usage of renewable energy sources, especially for water desalination.

This project is in line with the Kingdom’s strategic drive for clean energy, strengthening the initiative’s objective to promote cooperation in hydrogen and renewable energy technologies and securing the country’s place in the world energy transition. “We are laying the foundation for a more robust and sustainable energy and water infrastructure in Saudi Arabia by investing in state-of-the-art desalination technologies in addition to renewable energy innovation and green hydrogen production solutions,” stated Thomas Altmann, executive vice president for Innovation and New Technology at ACWA Power.
