Aleppo International Airport in Syria Reopens For Both Domestic and International Travel

The nation’s second major hub reopened for air activity on Tuesday, as the first passenger flight from Damascus touched down. LONDON: After closing for almost three months, the Syrian Arab Republic has allowed flights to resume at its second main airport. In the midst of an official ceremony attended by leaders of Syria’s new interim government, Aleppo International Airport reopened for air traffic on Tuesday, and the first passenger flight from Damascus touched down there, according to the SANA news agency.

When opposition groups launched an offensive against Bashar Assad’s regime in early December, the airport was shut down in November. Over the past three months, Syrian authorities have carried out repairs and maintenance to allow aviation travel to and from Aleppo, the nation’s second-largest city after the capital and a crucial hub for trade and industry.

Nearly 10 million Syrian refugees presently residing in Turkey and Europe will be able to return to their homeland according to the announcement by authorities that Aleppo will start to receive international flights. According to SANA, it will also make it possible for both domestic and foreign investors to visit the city.

Aleppo International Airport’s services are being expanded “to turn it into a key air gateway in Syria capable of handling more flights and connecting the country to the world,” according to Alaa Sallal, director of relations at the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority.
