RIYADH: At the UN Convention to Combat Desertification conference, youth empowerment has become a key topic.
COP16 has brought attention to creative youth-led projects and tackled the structural obstacles that young leaders must overcome to promote sustainable land management.
The conference, which commences on December 2, is in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s determination to include its youth in addressing climate issues. Important conversations have emphasized how crucial it is to include youthful voices in the formulation of policies and decisions.
Giving young people a voice at the decision-making table is one of the most important issues being tackled at COP16.
16-year-old youth climate campaigner Catarina Lorenzo spoke in the run-up to the conference and passionately argued for including younger generations in the development of solutions to the environmental challenges they will inherit.
“We bring the voice of nature to the table when we bring children,” she said. “Effective measures must be taken immediately. In addition to participating in the negotiation spaces, we also want to be treated with respect.
