LONDON: According to The Guardian on Friday, two Australian pro-Palestine activists have claimed they were “brutalized psychologically” after the Israeli military stopped the boat they were on as it attempted to enter Gaza. As the boat, Handala, attempted to deliver help as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Tania Safi, Robert Martin, and 19 other people were arrested on board. Safi and Martin said that upon their detention, they were stripped naked and treated “like criminals.”
“It feels like a bit of a dream at the moment to be honest,” Safi told reporters after returning to Australia on Friday. The journey has not been easy. We were tired and dehydrated,” she said. We have been cut off from the outside world. According to Safi, at least thirty highly armed Israeli troops boarded the Handala and attempted to record the protestors as they received treatment. With the video team, they were attempting to get us to take items from them by giving food and water, but none of us would, she claimed. “We don’t want to take anything from something that is killing infants by starvation.” After being transported to Ashdod, the activists were held in an interrogation room and had their belongings seized. Israeli forces attacked one of them, Chris Smalls, a US citizen.
