India is now in the top tier of tariffed countries as a result of U.S. President Donald Trump’s additional 25% tariff on the South Asian country’s imports from Russia, which he claims is assisting Russia in its war in Ukraine.
Although Russia is a significant supplier of India’s defense weapons and New Delhi and Moscow have a long history of strategic cooperation that dates back to the Cold War, Trump’s anger has mostly been directed towards the recent increase in India’s oil imports from its former friend.
At a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine—all things not good—India was “Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China.” On July 30, Trump made a post on his Truth Social platform.
“Some of the richest families in India” benefited most from these imports, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on August 19. Under the leadership of Asia’s wealthiest individual, Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Industries (RIL) has been the largest importer of Russian seaborne crude oil into India.
In 2021, only 3% of the crude imported by RIL’s refinery in Jamnagar came from Russia. According to data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), based in Finland, it has increased dramatically during the conflict in Ukraine, reaching an average of 50 percent in 2025.
