The first half of 2024 saw a noteworthy 37.4% year-over-year rise in container handling in Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, indicating robust expansion in the maritime industry.
This period saw a rise in the port’s standard unit handling from 1.11 million units to 1.53 million units. Additionally, transshipment containers increased by 87.87 percent from 20,124 in 2023 to 37,806 units, as per data from the Saudi Ports Authority, also referred to as Mawani.
This development is in line with Saudi Arabia’s larger initiatives to improve its transportation and logistics capabilities, which in turn supports Vision 2030’s objectives of diversifying the economy and positioning the Kingdom as a worldwide hub for logistics. This change is being fueled by investments in technology, maritime infrastructure, and strategic alliances, which are strengthening the Kingdom’s position in global trade routes.
Comparing this year’s numbers to those from the previous year—449,219 and 647,790 units, respectively—outgoing containers jumped by 39.07 percent to 624,710 units, while arriving ships increased by 34.68 percent to 872,445 units. The port’s total cargo volume increased from 19.36 million tonnes to 24.92 million tonnes last year, a 28.75 percent increase. Additionally, there was a notable growth in general cargo handling, which reached 25.80 million tonnes, up 49.47 percent from 17.26 million tonnes in 2023.
